Tall, muscular and fierce are the adjectives which define Abhimanyu Mithun the best. Mithun was a late starter when it came to taking up cricket as a profession. He started playing leather ball cricket only at the age of 17. This was basically because Mithun had set his sights on athletics and was ambitious about becoming a professional discus thrower. However, destiny had other plans for Mithun.

Mithun was born on 25th October 1989 and brought up in Bangalore. His father was the owner of a gymnasium and that is where Mithun trained to become an athlete. However, along the way, Mithun had a change of heart and decided to give cricket a shot. He soon joined the Vultures Cricket Club as a right-arm fast bowler and over a period of two years, Mithun made it to the Karnataka Ranji Trophy side.

His Ranji Trophy debut was outstanding as he scalped 11 wickets against Uttar Pradesh. The game witnessed him taking a remarkable hat trick as well. His maiden first-class season mirrored that of Javagal Srinath’s in 1988/89 season. After the 2009/10 Ranji Trophy season, where he picked up 47 wickets, Mithun was drafted into the India Test squad for the 2010 tour of Sri Lanka and claimed 4 wickets on debut.

Mithun has so far earned 4 Test matches and 5 ODIs caps. He was auctioned for a whopping 1.7 Crores in the 2011 edition of the IPL Auctions and he was the only Karnataka-based played to feature in the RCB squad that season. Ray Jennings, the then coach of RCB had once famously said that Mithun is an “Express Bowler” and has the potential to make it big in the future.

In the 2013/14 Ranji Trophy season, Mithun produced amazing spells of bowling and topped the bowling ranks for Karnataka with 41 wickets to his name. In addition to this, Mithun has been a regular in the KPL tournament since its inception in the year 2009. He has bagged 27 wickets till date in the KPL and boasts an excellent economy of 6.28 runs an over – which for a fast bowler in the T20 format of the game is quite exceptional.
